October 3-5, 2008 National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation Conference

Call for workshop proposals, “innovations,” and networking topics for NCDD 2008

This year’s National Conference on Dialogue & Deliberation is being held in Austin, Texas, October 3-5. If you are dedicated to solving problems through honest talk, quality thinking, and collaborative action, we hope to see you there!

NCDD’s biennial conferences, which are highly participatory, highly innovative and surprisingly affordable, bring together leaders and future leaders in public engagement, conflict resolution and related fields to share resources and strategies, build lasting relationships, increase the visibility and effectiveness of their work, tackle challenges we face, and initiate collaborative projects. Many people have told us they’re the best conferences they’ve ever attended.

At NCDD Austin, we’re offering more ways than ever for conference participants to contribute content, share their work, and make progress on issues they care about. We welcome you to submit your proposals now for:

   1. Concurrent Workshops (unique, engaging sessions that highlight the best the dialogue and deliberation community has to offer)
   2. Innovations (innovative projects/strategies that address some of the biggest challenges and issues we face in the field; we’ll match you up with other innovators with similar topics to organize joint collaborative sessions at the conference)
   3. Networking Topics and Facilitators (topics you’re really into, so you can meet others who share your same interests during a fun, structured networking session)

More details about these 3 opportunities, and the forms for submitting proposals and ideas are at www.thataway.org/events/?page_id=119.

Please note that the deadline for submitting workshop proposals and innovations is Friday, May 16th. The deadline for submitting networking topics and signing up to facilitate topics is July 19th. We’re also running two Q&A-type conference calls for people who have questions about these opportunities - one this Wednesday at 7 pm Eastern and one on Tuesday, May 6th at 11 am Eastern. The long distance call-in number for both calls is 1-712-580-8020, and the access code is 444839.

And if you’re planning on joining us in Austin, you may want to register before May 16th so you get the super-low early rate of only $300 (!). Registration details can be found at www.thataway.org/events/?page_id=136.

October 4-5, 2008  “Aiki Kodomo Kenshukai” Teaching Aikido to Children Workshop

ABC partner, Aiki Extensions, an international, nonviolent conflict resolution nonprofit based in Berkeley CA and Chicago IL, invites you to  Aikido of Berkeley 1352 S 49th St Richmond, CA  October 4 & 5, 2008 Saturday 10:00 AM - Sunday 3:00 PM

In 2006, the first "How to Teach Aikido to Children" seminar for teachers was held in Virginia. The event included presentations from ten senseis and was enthusiastically received by 40 attendees. Many positive reports were written on many aikido websites (see our Press Room at http://www.aikidoinn.com/index.php?page=press for links to some of these reviews). It was suggested that the next seminar be held on the west coast to allow other people to participate. So this year, we will hold the Teaching Aikido to Children seminar at Aikido of Berkeley over the weekend of October 3, 2008.

The seminar is being organized as a resource for improving the quality and diversity of Aikido education to youths. The seminar will be taught by international Aikido instructors and educators from a variety of affiliations and is open to all Aikidoists. Space is limited so please register soon.  Learn new and mat-tested methods for enhancing children’s classes in the dojo. The workshop faculty is an experienced group of eleven Senseis, Aikidoists, and Educators from around the world who are gathering to provide "how-to" resources and share best practices.
* please join us *

How do I sign up?
Complete the registration form at http://www.gashuku.net/registration.pdf and pay the non-refundable $175 workshop fee (advance registration discount and scholarships available) or $225 at the door (if space is still available). October 9, 15, 16, 2008 Call & Response cinema event

Community support for an action against slavery

Brandon here, wanting to encourage you to consider the following action against slavery (child slavery, sexual slavery, child soldiers and forced labor). You've probably already heard about it but I wanted to add that I've been in contact with Justin and Victoria (the project director) about their financial oversight and reporting and they have a strong system in place and a clear commitment to transparency.

Want to get a movie group together and head for the Landmark Shattuck? How about Thu Oct 16th at 7pm?

Please make public when you intend to go by adding a comment at the bottom of this page.

Brandon

Subject: Never been done before

Hey Brandon,
This is Justin Dillon from the rockumentary film CALL+RESPONSE. Just a quick note to let you know that the film's new official site is now live. This is not just about the film; it is about giving you more ways to free the 27 million men, women, and children enslaved around the globe. In the coming days we will launch a way for you to help fund small dollar projects (supported by our partner organizations) that respond to the immediate needs of victims. We are attempting to do something that has never been done before.  A non-corporate, all-volunteer, all grassroots, all artist-led effort to move people from awareness to action. Awareness is a 90's word. Now is the time for action.

Action begins with making sure that every seat in every theater is sold starting on Oct 9. Remember, this is a non-profit film -- every dollar goes back into the cause. The best way to get involved is to a) buy 1, 5, 10, even a whole theater of tickets, and b) join or log-in to our growing abolitionist network at betheresponse.com and invite 5 friends to join you!

Remember, justice is what love looks like in public.
Cheers,
Justin
