Questions

Discussion of themes that arise in the building of community give rise to questions and responses in context. The potential responses are inumerable, from a pattern language for group process to community meetings, dialogue and deliberation councils, and every manifestation of the process arts.

Religion, Psychology and Mythology

For the summer, this section is devoted to the questions arising around the work of Huston Smith, specifically oriented toward his conversations at Epworth United Methodist Church in July 2009. Q for Dr. Smith: When you introduce the "Cosmic Dancer" idea of world citizenship to draw attention to The World's Religions, are you thinking in the vicinity of Joseph Campbell's idea that understanding belief mythologically is "anticipating the religions of the next century"?

Q for anybody: Where can I get into a practice group that builds community on purpose using the process arts?

From the previous session:

What do you think about Richard Dawkins' ideas in general and The God Delusion in particular?

Given your history, what do you think about current day missionary projects?

From Richard Page:  Is Life a goal to be reached, a loving eternal schoolroom growing souls, or a shadow on a cave wall?

Q1: How did the 8-day sleepless psychotic break end? Did it lead to satori or some form of awakening? Was it useful? Would you recommend it? Q2: What do you expect to be the place of religion of the future? I would say a preponderance of my acquaintances and work colleagues are quite secularly-minded; some would consider themselves "spiritual but not religious", but many don't even consider themselves to have significant spiritual interest. If Berkeley is a trend-setter, will this be the future of America and the world? I'm pretty okay with the idea of fewer "religious" people, but I'm concerned about the increase in people without a spiritual orientation. Will people forge a new path to nurture spirituality without necessarily being religious in any of the 8 traditional forms mentioned Sunday? And who will inculcate spiritual values if not religious leaders?

Would you entertain the idea that there is a collective soul for all humanity? That there exists an ecosystem of souls in which human beings are only one part? I feel deeply that religion evolves, and that the Divine can be perceived as evolving. Are perfection and immutability simply human constructs that impose limits on the unsayable in an attempt to protect our geocentric, homocentric privilege as the chosen species? Is the human driven rate of species extinction a sin? Can the crisis of global warming cause us to transcend our fear and greed and to accept the paradise offered in acts of radical mercy and humility toward our fellow human and toward other souls as well?
